How To Properly Charge An E-Bike

Charging an e-bike battery is crucial to ensure its longevity and performance. Just like you need to fill up your car at the tank, you need to fill up your pedal at the outlet! At PEDAL Electric, we offer two different battery options for our e-bikes, a 48v 15ah battery for the CORE and a 48v 21ah battery for the AWD 3, each with different capacities and charging times.

Proper/Best Practices:

Turn off the battery before charging: It is important to turn off your e-bike battery before charging it. This helps to protect the battery from any potential damage and also helps to conserve energy allowing your battery to charge slightly faster.

Charge the battery at room temperature: It is recommended to charge the battery at room temperature for best results. Extreme temperatures can affect the battery’s charging efficiency and also reduce its lifespan. Our batteries do have a tough exterior coating to protect against harsh weather conditions but it is best to try to adhere to this when you can for the health and longevity of your battery.

Charge the battery regularly: Regular charging helps to keep the battery in good condition and prevents it from becoming completely depleted. Just like you shouldn’t let your car sit for too long, the same applies for your Pedal!

Charge the battery to its full capacity: Charging the battery to its full capacity is essential to maintain its longevity and performance. A fully charged battery will also provide better range and power.

Charge the battery either in the bike or detached: With PEDAL Electric, you have the freedom to charge the battery while it is in the bike or detached from the bike. This flexibility allows you to charge the battery in the most convenient way for you.

Make sure the battery is off when plugging into or out of the bike: Making sure your battery is turned off when removing, or plugging the battery into the bike is very IMPORTANT. Allowing energy to flow through the connection ports while plugging in or removing it will cause deterioration on those ports and affect the health and range of your battery. Continually doing this can result in your ports breaking and requiring a replacement.

Monitor the charging process: Keep an eye on the charging process to ensure that it is working properly. If you notice any issues, stop the charging process immediately and seek a technician's help. The light on the charger is an indicator. When the charger is plugged in and the light stays red, it means you still require more charge time. The charger light will switch to green when fully charged.

Do not overcharge: Although overcharging our batteries is not detrimental to their health, overtime this will have an effect and cause deterioration. In order to keep your battery's health as optimal as possible make sure to unplug the charger when you notice it is full. Try not to keep it plugged in overnight or over multiple days.

The 48v 15ah battery for the CORE typically takes 4-5 hours to fully charge, while the 48v 21ah battery for the AWD 3 may take slightly longer, around 5-6 hours to reach full capacity. These charging times may vary depending on the power output of the charger and other factors. PEDAL Electric also sells 5A Supercharger which essentially cuts the charging time in half for all models.

Following these best practices when charging your e-bike battery will help to extend its lifespan, improve its performance, and provide you with a better riding experience. At PEDAL Electric, we offer a range of high-quality e-bike batteries with different capacities and charging times, so you can choose the one that best suits your needs.
